Diário de Bordo: Uma semana com 30 quilômetros a pé por dia em New York

Ela é aquela cidade que chama atenção dos pés à cabeça. Desde suas lojas aos seus wallscapes (outdoor de alta definição com anúncio de propaganda ou outros assuntos), é praticamente hipnotizante olhar para seus detalhes. Em cada esquina, uma oportunidade para degustar a história por trás daquele coração pulsante. Ela começa cedo, seus habitantes parecem, literalmente, desfilar. São bailarinos prontos para entrar no espetáculo, são modelos fazendo ensaio fotográfico, são pessoas indo trabalhar no centro financeiro mais propulsor do mundo. São turistas com a vontade de registrar cada movimento. Não importa, se está frio a elegância era algo mágico. Se estava todo colorido era cool. Se era um casaco longo era style. Se abusava na composição não existiam julgamentos, lá basta viver porque ninguém se incomodará. É tudo tão intenso e tão inebriante que o que vivenciamos ultrapassa todos os limites. Quem já foi a New York sabe do que eu estou falando. Se ainda não foi arruma as malas, ou antes, melhor, leia esta reportagem que faço com muito carinho e trago dicas para você que vai viajar para a Cidade Luz. Este termo é usado para Paris, na França, mas poderia caber muito bem, porque as luzes não se apagam, nem dos escritórios, quanto menos da vida noturna.
Embarque de conhecimento:
Um pouco de dados para enriquecer o cérebro. Nova York é a cidade mais populosa dos Estados Unidos. É também a terceira cidade mais populosa da América, atrás de São Paulo (nós ganhamos neste quesito, mas em termos de estrutura perdemos feio) e Cidade do México. O município é composto por distritos de Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens e Staten Island. Por opção só fiquei em Manhattan, ou seja, fiz tudo a pé. Até porque buzina é sinal de trânsito e isso você verá muito. Como uma grande metrópole, o uso do carro, mesmo tendo um metrô tão acessível e de fácil uso, é algo sempre bem-vindo. As vias ficam intensas. Então, como sabia que ia comer muito, aliás, vou elencar para vocês as maravilhas daqui a pouco, cheguei a andar média de 30 quilômetros por dia. Seguindo. Como escolhi meu hotel? Sim, eu não sabia que era tão bem localizado, mas hoje as avaliações são um ponto para você poder escolher bem. Então, como estou escrevendo aqui vai contar ainda mais, porque pode acreditar de hotel eu entendo e gosto de saber todos os detalhes. O Westhouse foi aquela opção acertada em cheio. Ele está no campo mais luxuoso das avenidas. Explico: New York tem várias ruas em paralela com inúmeras avenidas, as mais conhecidas são a 5th Avenue e a 7th Avenue. O hotel ficava exatamente entre a Broadway, a Times Square há dois quarteirões do Central Park. Para se ter ideia este parque maravilhoso no meio da ilha de Manhattan, ocupa uma imensa área verde que vai da 5th Avenue à 8th Avenue e da 59th Street à 110th Street. Considerado cinco estrelas, o valor da compra foi um atrativo, porém é preciso ficar atento. O local cobra $43 por dia e por pessoa para ser quitado no local. Achei um pouco salgado este resort fee, a taxa é fixa em todos lugares, porém o valor pode alterar. Está incluso café da manhã (não é o dos melhores, mas muito agradável) e também incluso digamos um brunch noturno, composto por uns quitutes e uma massa com bebidas à vontade (vinho, água, refrigerante, cerveja). Por favor, não se esqueça de deixar tips (gorjeta) para os atendentes, o sorriso é movido por este tipo de atitude.
Lugares:
A 5th Avenue é para te dizer que os norte-americanos podem ser alusivos a Itu (Interior do Estado de SP). A brincadeira é porque lá tudo é grande. Uma loja é cinco vezes maior do que qualquer outra em qualquer outro lugar. Marcas que fazem parte do nosso imaginário consumista estão lá te convidando a vivenciar seu dia a dia. A loja que mais me chamou a atenção foi a Coco Chanel, um quarteirão com vitrines incrivelmente decoradas fazem com que você um tempo admirando sua grandiosidade.
Outro lugar especial é a Times Square, mas confesso que frustra um pouco. Assim como todos os monumentos, as pessoas falam: “Nossa, mas parece tão grande na foto”. Assim é este lugar, você espera mais dele, mas não significa que ele não tem seu charme. Para tirar foto é o ponto alto. Aliás, dica para tirar foto. Nas calçadas tem alguns degraus, que te deixam mais alto e fazem o ângulo ficar fantástico.
Central Park é a composição exata do que podemos nos referir à história. Tive muita sorte na estadia, pois não choveu nenhum dia, o que na semana antecedente a minha ida, foi algo constante. Ainda tinha a previsão de neve, o que me causou bastante ansiedade. Então, a temperatura, em plena chegada de primavera, foi assim: frio, muito frio, com sol reluzente, neve intensa em único dia, e depois mais frio e sol. Um convite para cliques perfeitos. Unir a natureza ao cotidiano do nova-iorquino é algo espetacular e feito com muita maestria. Todo dia você quer ir ‘dar um pulo’ no CP. Visitar tantos monumentos referentes à nossa imaginação: fonte do seriado Friends, praça do Esqueceram de Mim, entre tantos outros. É possível fazer todo o roteiro de carruagem – um luxo -, de bicicleta – confortável – e bom valor, mas eu optei por ir a pé. Distante, mas sensacional. Além da pista de gelo que deixou tudo com mais colorido, mesmo tendo uma cor somente.
Não podia deixar de visitar Wall Street. Onde vários cenários foram usados nas melhores películas, onde a tradição visa encontrar com a novidade e onde foi possível tirar uma foto com o emblemático touro e a menina, que diz muito sobre o empoderamento feminino. Este foi o único lugar que usei táxi para ir, pois é longe de onde estávamos hospedados. No mesmo roteiro estava incluso ir até a Estátua da Liberdade, mas a fila realmente me fez desanimar. Além de o vento estar matador, tínhamos de esperar no mínimo três horas. Não vi necessidade para tanto. Mas se alguém acha que deve ir me conte depois o porquê.
Agora meu queridinho. Madison Square Garden. Ingresso comprado para assistir ao jogo de basquetebol entre os donos da casa Knicks e Chicago Bulls. Que show. Que espetáculo. Não era a Broadway, mas era digno de palco. Cada ponto, uma manobra. Cada intervalo, uma dança e uma brincadeira. Plateia lotada, plateia inteirada. Para apaixonados por esporte com bola como eu, foi a sensação máxima de estar na arena de grandes partidas. Além disso, os musicais, como Justin Timberlake, que passou por lá na mesma semana, fazem com que o lugar seja considerado um dos mais atrativos.
Coloque no seu GPS: Madame Trussauds, muito gostoso e icônico, com suas amenidades direcionadas ao povo americano. Vale a ida e se você juntar com o passeio de bus pela cidade pode ser uma boa pedida para quem não quer andar a pé.
Gastronomia: NY não é uma cidade “em conta”. O brasileiro já sofre por ter de converter a moeda de quase quatro para um. Mas para se comer bem e não ligar muito para a questão de conversão alguns lugares valem muito a pena. Anote: Oliver Garden, uma das melhores massas que já apreciei. Experimente a que é composta com camarão. Nossa conta neste local para dois ficou cerca de $149. Não bebemos bebida alcoólica.
Hard Rock Café: sim, eu vou em HRC onde quer eu esteja no mundo. Até porque sei que tudo que é servido lá é muito saboroso. Portanto, hambúrguer e drinques foram nosso pedido. A média de gasto ficou em $170, incluindo três drinques, duas cervejas. Lembrando que o local oferece a escolha de beber comprando o souvenier. Vale a pena trazer o item para casa.
Uma grata surpresa. Nos indicaram uma churrascaria. Afinal, como bons brasileiros, já estávamos sentindo falta de arroz com feijão. E fui conhecer a Plataforma: churrascaria cariosa. No local, todos falam português e inglês, claro. O self service é fantástico, composto por muitos quitutes saborosíssimos, as carnes e os acompanhamentos nota 1.000. O valor por pessoa é $49, rodízio. A caipirinha que eu tomei passou longe da que eu realmente gosto.
New York, New York:
Sim, existem milhares de outros pontos tur
ísticos. Milhares de outros redutos gastronômicos. Inclusive, mais alguns eu visitei, apreciei e podemos conversar em uma próxima. Compras, não aconselho a quem quer procurar itens baratos, lá é moda, lá é custo. As outlets ficam mais longe e não visitei. Certeza que irei em uma outra oportunidade. Só não deixe de aproveitar a Marshals, são andares e andares de puro consumismo, mas fique ligado nas promoções nem tudo realmente compensa. Também deixo para vocês opinarem o que é NY para vocês. It is that city that calls attention from head to toe. From its stores to its wallscapes, it’s virtually hypnotizing to look at all its details. At every corner, an opportunity to experience the history behind that pulsing heart. It wakes up early, its inhabitants seem to literally parade. They are dancers ready to enter the show, they are models doing photo essays, and they are people going to work in the most propelling financial center in the world. They are tourists with the desire to register each movement. It doesn’t matter if it’s cold, elegance was something magic. If you are all colorful, it is cool. If you are on a long coat, it is in style. If you abuse the dressing composition, there are no judgments. In NY, living your own life is just enough, as no one would bother about small things. Everything is so intense and so inebriating that the experiences you have surpasses all its limits. Anyone who’s been to New York knows what I’m talking about. If you haven’t packed your bags yet, or rather, you’d better read this report I do with great affection and the tips I bring to you that will travel to City of Light. This term is used for Paris, in France, but it could fit for NY just fine, because the lights there never go out, either in the offices, even less in the nightlife.
Bill of lading: Some brain-enhancing information: New York is the most populous city in the United States. It is also the third most populous city in America, behind São Paulo (we won in that matter, but in terms of structure we lost badly) and Mexico City. The city consists of Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island boroughs. By choice I only stayed in Manhattan, that is, I did everything on foot. Likewise, as horns are traffic signs and those you will hear and see a lot. As a great metropolis, even having such an accessible and practical subway system, the roads are intense due the use of cars. Then, since I knew I was going to eat a lot – in fact I’m going to list the wonders for you in a little while – I got to walk an average of 30 kilometers a day. So, how did I choose my hotel? Well, I didn’t know it was so well located but today ratings are a point to consider for making a wise choice. As I am writing here it will count even more. I know a lot about hotels and I like to know about all the details, trust me. The WestHouse Hotel was that wise choice. It is in the most luxurious area of the avenues. I’ll explain it: New York has several streets in parallel with numerous avenues, the most well-known being 5th and 7th Avenues. The hotel was exactly between Broadway and Times Square, two blocks away from Central Park. To get an idea of this wonderful park in the middle of the island of Manhattan, it occupies an immense green area that goes from 5th to 8th Avenues and from 59th to 110th Streets. Considered a five stars hotel, the booking was attractive, but you have to stay alert: The website charges $43 per day per person to be cashed on the spot. I think that resort fee is little pricey, but the rate is fixed everywhere, however the amount might change. Nevertheless, breakfast is included (not the best one but even though it’s nice) and it also includes a kind of evening brunch, consisting of patisseries and some pasta with drinks at will (wine, water, soda, beer). Please do not forget to leave tips for the attendants; smiles are driven by that kind of attitude.
Places: 5th Avenue shows that Americans can be somehow allusive to Itu (a countryside city in Sao Paulo State -Brazil). The reference here is for that in both places things are huge. A store in 5th Avenue is five times larger than any other, anywhere else. Brands that are part of our imaginary consumerism are everywhere, inviting you to experience them day to day. The store that caught my eye was Coco Chanel, a full block with incredibly well-decorated windows that makes you admirer its grandeur.
Another special place is Times Square, but I confess it’s a little frustrating. Like all monuments, people say, “Wow, it looks so big in the picture”. So is that place, you expect more of it, but it does not mean it doesn’t have its charm. Taking photos there is a high point. By the way, a tip to take a photo: on the sidewalks there are a few steps, which make you taller and the shooting angle fantastic.
Central Park is the exact composition of what we can refer to history. I was very lucky during my stay, because it hadn’t rained at all, which on the week before my trip was unstoppable. I still had the snow forecast, which made me very anxious. So the temperature, in full spring arrival, was like this: cold, very cold, bright sunshine, intense snow on a single day, and then cold and sunny again. An invitation for perfect photo clicks. Joining nature to New York daily life is something spectacular and done with great mastery. Every day you want to drop by CP. Visiting many monuments related to our imagination: the water font from the sitcom Friends, the square from the movie “Home Alone”, among many others. It is possible to do the entire route by carriage – a luxury -, by bicycle – comfortable and at a fair price, but I chose to go on foot. It’s a long way but amazing. All this in addition to the ice rink that even having only a single plain color left everything more colorful.
I couldn’t miss visiting the Wall Street area and the several scenarios that were used in the best movies. It’s where tradition aims to find novelty and also where it is possible to take a photo at the emblematic Fearless Girl sculpture, which says much about female empowerment. This was the only place I went by taxi to go as it is far from where we were staying. In that same itinerary, I would be going to the Statue of Liberty, but the queue really got me discouraged. Besides the killer wind, we would have to wait for at least three hours. That was too much to bother. Anyway, if anyone believes it’s worth it, let me know why.
Now my dearest: Madison Square Garden. I had purchased tickets to watch the basketball match between the home team NY Knicks vs Chicago Bulls. What a show! What a spectacle! It was not Broadway, but it was worthy of stage. At each point, a maneuver. At each break, a dance and a fun interaction with the audience. What a crowded and merged audience! For lovers of ball-sports like me, being in that huge arena was the uppermost feeling of all. Furthermore, musical attractions, such as Justin Timberlake show – which was there on the same week – make the place considered one of the most attractive.
Set you GPS: Madame Tussauds. It is very cozy and iconic, with its amenities directed to the American people. It is worth the trip and you can add to it a city bus ride, which is a good call for those who do not want to walk.
Gastronomy: NY is not the city if you are “on the budget”. Brazilians already suffer from having to convert the currency from almost four to one. But if the goal is to eat well, and close your eyes to the currency conversion some places are well worth it. Note: Olive Garden, it has one of the best pasta I’ve ever had. Try the one made with shrimps. Our bill there on a meal for two was about $ 149. We haven’t consumed anything alcoholic.
Hard Rock Café: Of course I’ll pay a visit to a HRC wherever I go in the world. Especially knowing that everything served there is very tasty. So, we ordered burgers and drinks. The average spent was $ 170, including three drinks and two beers. Keep in mind the option of buying the drink as a souvenir, which is worth it bringing home.
A pleasant surprise: We were made known a Brazilian Steakhouse. After all, as good Brazilians we were already missing our rice and beans. And I paid a visit to “Plataforma”: a Rio-like steakhouse. Everyone there speaks both Portuguese and English, of course. The all-you-can-eat buffet is fantastic. There are several tasty flavors, and both meats and the side dishes are all exquisite! The buffet is $49 per person. The caipirinha I had was far from the way I like it.
New York, New York: Yes, there are thousands of other touristic sights. There are thousands of other gastronomic strongholds. Furthermore, I’ve visited and enjoyed a few other places which we can talk about at another time. I do not recommend going shopping for those who are looking for cheap items. There it is fashion, there it is expensiveness. The outlets are farther away, and I haven’t visited them. I’m sure I’ll check them out it in a next visit. Just be sure to enjoy Marshals, there are floors and floors of pure consumerism, but stay tuned in the sales, not everything really pays off.
